Apex Legends: The Board Game – My Most Anticipated Game of the Year
Apex Legends: The Board Game: My Most Anticipated Game of the Year
As a longtime fan of Apex Legends, I’ll be honest—when they first announced a board game version, I was skeptical. The video game is all about fast-paced movement, team coordination, and clutch shootouts. How on Earth was that supposed to translate to cardboard, and miniatures?
But then, in 2023, I had the opportunity to play an early version of Apex Legends: The Board Game, and everything changed. Within the first game, I was completely hooked. Now, it's easily one of my most anticipated—and most loved—tabletop games of the year.
Glass Cannon Unplugged has done something special here. They’ve captured the spirit of Apex Legends—the tension, the speed, the strategy—and transformed it into a tactile, immersive tabletop experience that stays true to the source material without feeling like a gimmick.
Let’s break it down.
The Game Structure: Fast-Paced and Strategic
The game is played over three distinct phases: Character Draft, Map Drop, and the Final Encounter. Each phase is designed to reflect the flow of a real Apex Legends match and set the stage for the chaotic fun to follow.
Phase 1: Character Draft – Choose Your Legend
Just like in the video game, each player selects a Legend during the Character Draft. This phase not only gives players their character (with unique abilities and playstyles), but it also sets the tone for their approach to the rest of the game.
You'll also draw random loot cards during this phase to build your starting loadout. These cards can include weapons, armor, and tactical gear that may give you an early-game edge—or challenge you to adapt quickly. This randomness is a big part of the fun and replayability.
Choosing your Legend is more than just picking a cool mini—each one has distinct strengths, passive abilities, and synergies that come into play later. Whether you're running as Wraith and playing hit-and-run tactics, or Gibraltar and holding down territory, every Legend plays differently and feels true to their digital counterpart.
Phase 2: Map Drop – Make the Call
In the Map Drop phase, players decide where on the modular game board to deploy their Legends. This isn’t just about location—it’s about strategy. Do you drop together and fight as a team? Or split up to cover more ground and take a risk?
Each drop location has potential benefits and drawbacks: access to loot, line-of-sight advantages, or proximity to other players. It’s a brief phase, but it's packed with tension. A smart drop can mean the difference between surviving the first round or getting ambushed early.
Phase 3: Final Encounter – It’s Go Time
This is where the game hits its stride and turns into a full-on tactical showdown.
Each player takes turns using action points to move, shoot, loot, and use their abilities. There’s no randomness in movement or shooting (outside of weapon stats and hit cards where applicable)—it’s all about smart decision-making and positioning.
Combat is clean and fast-paced, but still crunchy enough to be satisfying. Line of sight, terrain cover, and ability combos all matter. You’re constantly adapting, weighing risk vs. reward, and trying to outthink your opponents.
Loot continues to play a role as you scavenge better gear throughout the fight. You might upgrade your weapon mid-game, use a med pack to reclaim health, or grab a crucial piece of utility at the right moment.
This is Apex Legends through and through—every turn is a clutch moment waiting to happen.
Why It Works So Well
What blew me away most is how Apex Legends: The Board Game doesn’t just feel like a themed skirmish game. It actually feels like Apex. The tension, the pacing, the thrill of pulling off a perfect flank or clutching a 1v1—it’s all here.
Yes, the mechanics can look a little intimidating at first glance. There's a lot going on—different tokens, cards, abilities—but once you get into the rhythm, it all clicks. After a game or two, everything becomes intuitive and you’re thinking more about your strategy than your rulebook.
And the production quality? Top-tier. The miniatures are beautifully detailed. The cards, tokens, and game board all feel premium. It’s clear that Glass Cannon Unplugged poured a lot of love (and design experience) into every aspect of this.
Final Thoughts
Apex Legends: The Board Game went from a "wait and see" to a "must-have" in my collection. Whether you're a longtime Apex fan like me or just love fast, tactical skirmish games, there’s something here for you.
I’m beyond excited to get this to the table more often. If you’re on the fence, don’t be—this one absolutely delivers.
Shoutout to @GlassCannonUnplugged for knocking it out of the park.
