Geek Fest West: A fun convention for all things geek

Geek Fest West is a  Games and Gaming convention hosted and run by Nathan Mumm with the goal "To bring people together through Games and Gaming".

Geek Fest West is a mash up of everything geek with a focus on board games, Trading Card Games, RPGs and Retro Videogames, it is filled with vendors, cosplay, indie game developers, tournaments, events and more.

It was really cool to be able to go and experience a local event with such a big turnout, meeting people who are passionate about the same things I am all sharing in the same experience, Seeing indie developers who are so passionate about their projects showing them to people and talking about their games while seeing the enjoyment on the guests faces.

Pros: Its still a small local convention which means you get a much more personal experience at a much more affordable price tag,

there was a good amount of vendors, from retro games vendors, artists, board game stores, and TCG vendors. meaning there is plenty to browse as you walk around

there is also a lot of activities to attend, there was tournaments, an arcade, board game library, indie game demos, live shows and more.

Volunteer Driven, and a Non-Profit event.

Cons: There was a lot of Pokémon collector vendors, which is part of the community but did kind of make it feel more like a card show than a gaming convention at times.

As much as there is to do, you can easily see the entire convention in 1 day instead of the whole weekend, however I will say that with all the activities available if you take your time and go to all the shows, enjoy the library and arcade you would be able to fill the whole weekend.

Games I played:

Word Weaver Adventures:

Created by: Jerry Nguyen, Julia Nguyen, Jay Nguyen and Judy Cam

Word Weaver Adventures is the game that I enjoyed the most. it completely caught me off guard and I cant recommend this game enough. It is a Co-Op  boss battler scrabble game set in the early 1800s, it is both cute and historically accurate.

This game was created as a way to make scrabble cooperative after the creator got tired of losing in scrabble to his wife every time, which I think we can all relate to on some level.

You will pick one of 4 characters to play as, each with their own special abilities. For example, A cute Southern U.S lizard that doubles the point value of a letter for each player. Each critter is unique and accurately dressed for the historical period and location that animal would be found in the world.

Players will then flip over the first "Teacher" they have to face and will use the scrabble tiles to make a word for as many points as possible trying to reach the point value on the card to succeed, if they do they will pass and reset their tiles before facing the next "teacher". If they fail they will take a cracked tile marker and reduce the total number of letter tiles available to them before the next round.

This game is both extremely cute, a very obvious passion project for the creators and fantastic fun and adorable word game. you can find it in stores around the PNW as well as on their website https://www.jbirdgames.com/

Farce:

Farce is a super simple, fun word game about guessing what every other player has played.

you will take the cards in your hand and play them down to spell a word facedown, HOWEVER you do not need to spell a real word. but be careful because if a player can guess that your word isnt a real word you lose.

you will take turns asking another player if they have a certain letter in their word, if they do they reveal it. If not, then they will pick one of yours to reveal. Your goal is to be the last one with facedown letters.

It is a super fun small box word game, I definitely recommend trying it out if you get the chance to play it.

Can be found online and in stores.

Executive producer is all about making those hit movies with the big stars. The better match your script is to the director and stars you cast the more of a box office success it will be.

You take over a Hollywood studio, buy scripts, hire actors and directors, earn box office profits, win critical acclaim, awards and complete secret objectives.

I am so glad I was given the chance to play this early. The copy I played at Geek Fest was a prototype but I can already see where this game is going and I am so stoked to get it onto my table once it is fully released. its a fun game about making movies. Will have you guys laughing while also trying to get the best movies you can make, but you will also be review bombing your friends movies to try and make it a box office flop.

It will be released on Kickstarter Aug 11. So keep your eyes out for it.
